Philosopher of the Sea - Now Streaming
At the ripe age of 83, Swedish sailor Sven Yrvind has become a renowned figure around the world for his solo voyages across the oceans. For the last five years, we have had the privilege to observe closely as Yrvind puts together his boat and readies himself for the difficulty of being alone on the open sea - a journey spanning almost 15,000 miles from Ireland to New Zealand, estimated to take 300 days. Although many view Yrvind's project as a reckless venture, he himself believes that he is one of the few sane people in the world. However, the real exploration behind this journey is of a much deeper nature; an exploration into how we choose to live our lives.

The Story
Is it a film about sailing?
Philosopher of the Sea isn't mainly about sailing, but it does stimulate thought about the kind of lives we choose to have, consumerism, mortality, and aging. It raises the question of whether it's possible to live a life that isn't ordinary.

Feature film documentary
Director Andreas Eidhagen and Sven Yrvind
Philosopher of the Sea was directed and edited by Andreas Eidhagen who believes the documentary shows not only the physical obstacles that age brings, but also the psychological as well as philosophical questions an 83-year-old adventurer faces as he approaches the final years of his life. Through Yrvind's own stories and those of his friends, we get an understanding of his background and what made him choose this path in life – as a hermit of the sea distanced from conventional society.
